Mary Ann Appel passed away March 3, 2018. Visitation is March 9, 1-2 p.m., with the funeral service 2-3 p.m. at Longview Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO., and burial following at Longview Cemetery.
She was born May 22, 1926, in Frankfort, Indiana, to Ralph Charles Barnett and Flossie Mae (Harshman) Barnett, the youngest of four children that included Ralph Charles Barnett, Jr., William Edgar Barnett and Rex Ronald Barnett.
She graduated from Indiana University in 1948, and pledged Alpha Xi Delta. She met Charles Edward Appel, Jr. at the university and they were married October 12, 1949, at the Antioch Church in Frankfort. She worked at the I.R.S. as a tax examiner until she retired.
Our Mom was very generous with her time through the years by volunteering as a Camp Fire leader, as an advocate for literacy, in public schools with the Great Books program, and as a Laubach instructor. She contributed her time to St. Matthew Presbyterian Church and Lakeview Village.
She was not particularly fond of crafts, gardening, swimming, or cats. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries. She also enjoyed playing bridge, and supported the symphony, opera, and the arts. She was instrumental in encouraging her children and grandchildren to pursue higher education.
She is survived by her children: Charles E. Appel, III (Donna Appel) of Baton Rouge, LA; Nancy Jo Appel (John Peterson) Kansas City, MO; Susan Elizabeth Appel (Richard L. Henderson) of Leawood, KS; Anthony Alan Appel, Las Vegas, NV; and grandchildren: Calen Barnett Henderson, Adrian Lee Henderson, Chloe Elizabeth Henderson and Lauren Elyse Appel.
She will be missed. The family is deeply grateful and wishes to thank the many excellent caregivers at Lakeview Village and Vitas Hospice.
Please no flowers. Mary Ann Appel’s favorite causes include: KCPT-Public Television, Planned Parenthood, American Cancer Society and Vitas Hospice.
