Mrs. Irene Hooks

Irene Almea Hooks, born on October 1, 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Albert and Maggie (Turner) Clark, parents of eight.
From the early 1950's Mrs. Hooks was a beautician well known for her love of hair care, a religious leader, mentor and lover of children and teenagers; and a landlord of rental properties.
In 1958 she became a member of the Ypsilanti/Ann chapter of Cosmetology, Wolverine State Cosmetology Association Detroit, The National Cosmetology Association, Washington, D.C. and the North American Associations of Cosmetology.
In 1960 she opened the Bouffant Hair Fashions and Hair Weave Center where she introduced to Ann Arbor “Hair Weaving" and “Hair Analysis" (The scientific approach to hair care). With knowledge of hair analysis, she became known as the “Hair Physician" and her shop became known as "The Hair Care Clinic for Problem Hair", which she own and operated until 2004.
She surrendered her life to Jesus Christ in 1953 at the Fountain Church of God in Christ where she served on the mother's board. She taught the Sunday School Children of mixed ages up to 17 years of age until 1970, and then teenagers up to eighteen until 2005. She was also the president of the children's "Sunshine Band" (toddlers to age 12) for 31 years. Her life was wrapped up in the love of children. She always said she believed that her purpose in life was to bring up children in the admonition of the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Hooks, her parents, and three brothers. Albert, Edmund and Johnny Clark. Four sisters, Mary Hamilton, Beulah Hundley, Lula loving, and Carrie Bell. Three nephews, Odell Hamilton, Lawrence Sutherland, and Claude Wattree.
She leaves to cherish in her memories one daughter Bobette and her husband (Charles) deLisser, Port St. Lucie, FL; three grandchildren, Lawrence Eric Curtis Ford, of Raleigh, NC, Suzzette Jackson of Kansas City, MO, and Marquetta Curtis of Raleigh, NC. Six great-grandchildren. Tenesha, Lawrence Ford Jr., Laquetta, Robin, and Robert Perry all of Raleigh, NC, and Michelle of Ann Arbor, MI; four great-great grand’s, Syre, Heiress, and Destiny of North Carolina, and Liberti of Ann Arbor, MI, Many Grand-nieces, Grand-nephews, a wonderful church family and a host of friends. Osbourne and Esmee Exemines, of Boston, MA., and Weslia Holloway of Baltimore MA.
