Fred H. Price, 81, passed away at Saint Luke's Hospice House following an extended lung illness. A visitation will be held at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 4, from 9:45am-10:45am, followed by a memorial service at 11am. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the church columbarium. Memorial contributions are suggested to Woods Chapel UMC, American Legion Post 189, or MRTA.
Fred was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Northeast High School in 1960. After serving as a pattern maker in the US Navy on a submarine tender, he attended National College where he met his future wife, Irene. Fred and Irene were married in Melrose Methodist Church in 1964 and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in June of this year.
Fred completed his Bachelors, Masters, and Specialists degrees in Education at Central Missouri State University. He enjoyed his career as a teacher and principal in Raytown, Knob Noster, and Grandview. All of the children were important to him.
Music was an important part of Fred’s life, and he sang with the Metropolitan Men’s Chorus and Woods Chapel Church Choir, where he was a member.
After retirement, Fred was very active in the Missouri Retired Teacher Association (MRTA) and held several offices prior to being elected as state president for 2019-2020. He also joined American Legion Post 189 and served on the Honor Guard for as long as his health allowed.
Fred enjoyed the outdoors: hunting, fishing, biking (he rode the MS 150 several years), and backpacking in Colorado, and many sports, both playing and watching. He loved traveling, and he and Irene visited all 50 states and 67 countries.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene; brother, Robert Price (Janet); stepbrother, Larry (Martha); stepsister, Nancy; nephews, David (Debi) and Brad (Jen); nieces, Melissa (Jeff) and Joy (Ryan); several great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, James Price and his mother, Marie Price Nichols.
Fred had a good sense of humor, enjoyed serving others, and being with people, both young and old.
