Francisca Aponte

Francisca Dones Aponte, 97, passed away at her daughter’s home in Kansas City on February 20, 2021.  Visitation will be from 10-11am on Friday, February 26 at Longview Funeral Home, where the service will take place at 11am.  Burial will follow at Longview Cemetery.

Francisca was born on December 1, 1923 in Canovas, Puerto Rico.  She was the oldest of four full siblings and several half siblings.  In 1939 she eloped with the love of her life, Fructuoso, whom she would remain married to until his death in 2016.

Francisca and Fructuoso had one child, Anna, born in 1941.  In 1951, they moved to upper Manhattan, New York City, where Francisca worked as a seamstress for many years, and especially enjoyed taking care of her family, cooking, gardening, and sewing.  She was a devout Catholic, attending Mass every week, even attending virtually over the past few months.

Abuela, as she was called by her family, had a heart of gold, sweet disposition, was fiercely loyal and a natural caregiver.  She was also strong-willed, knew what she wanted, and wasn’t afraid to tell you.

Francisca was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and many siblings.  She is survived by her daughter, Anna Garcia; grandsons, Freddie (wife, Cindy) Garcia and Gabriel (wife, Nicole) Garcia; a brother, Robert Dones of New York; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a very special grand-dog.

She will be missed by all.
