Derline Yvonne Harris, age 72, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013. She was born in Kansas City, KS on July 23, 1940 to the late Hazel White and Leonard Woods. Derline was the eldest of four sisters. Two sisters, Brenda White and Wanda White-Jackson preceded her in death.
Derline graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, MO in 1959. She pursued a career in nursing and received her degree to practice as a Registered Nurse in 1979. The last 27 years of her career were spent at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Derline was a dedicated and caring nurse. She received numerous awards for service, such as the Heart of Gold Award for "courtesy, competence, compassion, and commitment." In 2005, she shared her talents as a nurse in New Orleans to support Hurricane Katrina victims. She retired in 2006.
Derline was a member of St Therese Little Flower Parish and an active volunteer. She was an excellent cook and will be remembered fondly for all the love and care she left behind with her dishes.
She is survived by her sister, Ernestine King (Joe); six children, Ricky Tyrone Harris (Violet), Lisa Manee King-Mays (Ray), Edwin Ty Harris (Charmaine), Sherida LaJoyce Harris, Christopher Wayne Harris, Dwayne Allen Harris; eleven grandchildren, a great grand-child, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at St Therese Little Flower Parish, 5814 Euclid Ave. Kc. Mo. Burial Longview Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 8-10 a.m. at the church.
