David Keith Irvin was born 10 December 1943 in McLeansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois, the third child of Cecil Grayson and Nora Odel [Combs] Irvin. Siblings: Sharon Sue [Irvin] Campbell, Larry Marvin Irvin, and Stephanie Grace [Irvin] [Whitson] Higgins. While in high school, David played trumpet for the national champion Black Knights Drum & Bugle Corps of Belleville, Illinois. As a graduate of East St. Louis (Illinois) Senior High School, David attended the University of Missouri in Rolla, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army, worked as a telephone lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and as a deputy sheriff and spent much of his professional life as a dispatcher for Yellow Transit Freight Lines in Overland Park, Kansas, from which he retired.

David married Darlene Sue Lannom (5 November 1943-1 February 1975) 12 February 1966 at Sterling Baptist Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The couple had no children. He and Gloria Faye Travis (27 November 1941-12 November 2020) were married 2 August 1974. At the time of their marriage, Faye had four children: Jeffrey Wayne, Brian Keith, Kathy Rene, and Karen Faye. David Keith Irvin II was born 3 July 1976.

David and Faye were active members of Southview Christian Church of Grandview, Missouri. Dave served in the office of deacon and went on mission trips to an orphanage in Mexico with men of the church. He was part of the patrol associated with Ararat Shriners of Kansas City. Dave and Faye were country line dance instructors. In addition to their travels to visit their grown children, Dave and Faye enjoyed camping with friends Jack and Missy Owens, and Dave had opportunity to tell many tall tales about their fishing exploits. He was a man who knew how to be a friend and could always be depended upon to answer a call for help, no matter the time of day or night.
